Why install a biomass boiler

A biomass boiler is similar in concept to an oil or gas system/regular boiler but uses wood pellets or chips as the heat source.

While not carbon neutral, a biomass boiler represents a reduction in the carbon footprint of the heating system.  As the boiler is able to provide the same output water temperatures as oil or gas it is a good direct replacement.

Points to consider:

  • A suitable location for the boiler and flue is required.

  • A fuel store is required.

  • Availability of suitable fuel should be considered.

Grant schemes

Currently there are no grants specifically aimed at biomass boilers.

Biomass boilers are eligible for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a government scheme that provides payments for the generation of heat from several different renewable energy sources. It was introduced in November 2011 to replace the Low Carbon Building Program in encouraging more people to invest in renewable forms of heating.  It is due to close for new applications on 31 March 2022.

Please see the following Government website for further details and RHI calculator:

 https://www.gov.uk/renewable-heat-incentive-calculator

The following use the 'Heat Incentive Calculator' to estimate the RHI payments.  The details of the property are:

  • Detached

  • Four Bedroom

  • Constructed before 1900

  • Well insulated roof

  • Solid walls

  • Currently heated with older oil boiler, installed before 2005

Biomass boiler, RHI payment estimate is an annual payment of £1,800, payment of £12,600 over 7 years, Payment tariff of 7.01 pence/kWh

Note: Changes to the RHI tariff will affect the projected RHI payment.
