Benefits of Solar Panels
Installing solar panels is one of the most effective ways to take control of your energy costs and reduce your reliance on the grid. The benefits include:

1. Lower Electricity Bills
A typical domestic system can save hundreds of pounds a year, with larger systems saving over £800 annually depending on usage and tariff.
2. Earn from exported energy
Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your energy supplier pays you for any surplus electricity your panels send back to the grid.
3. Protection against rising energy prices
The more electricity you generate yourself, the less exposed you are to wholesale price increases.
4. Reduced carbon footprint
A standard domestic system can offset around a tonne of CO2 every year, helping the UK move away from fossil fuels.
5. Increased property value
Energy-efficient homes are increasingly attractive to buyers, and a well-installed solar system can add to your EPC rating.

How Solar Panels Work
Solar panels (also called solar PV or photovoltaic panels) convert daylight into electricity you can use in your home or business. Here's the process in plain English:

-
Sunlight hits the panels. The photovoltaic cells inside each panel absorb light and generate direct current (DC) electricity. Panels work in daylight, not just direct sunshine, so they continue to produce power on overcast days.
-
The inverter converts DC to AC. Your home runs on alternating current (AC), so a solar inverter transforms the DC electricity into a usable form.
-
Your appliances use the electricity. Anything switched on while the sun is up draws first from your panels, reducing the amount you import from the grid.
-
Surplus electricity is exported or stored. If you're generating more than you're using, the excess can either be sent back to the grid (and you get paid for it via SEG) or stored in a battery for later use.
-
Your monitoring system tracks performance. Every system we install includes app-based monitoring, so you can see exactly how much you're generating, using and exporting in real time.

Solar FAQs
How much does a PV system cost?
A 4kW PV system with a 5kWh battery can generally be supplied and installed for around £6,200. This is onto a bungalow without any significant installation challenges. For an average 2 story property the same installation would cost around £,7,000.
How much can a PV system save me?
A solar PV (photovoltaic) system in the UK can save you from a few hundred to over a thousand pounds annually on energy bills and potentially earn you money through export tariffs, with savings depending on factors like system size, your location, your energy consumption habits, the inclusion of battery storage, and your specific energy tariff. For example, an average 3.5 kW system might save £190-£465 per year, while a larger system with a battery could save over £800 annually by reducing your reliance on grid electricity and allowing you to earn from selling surplus energy.
To provide a tailored estimate of potential savings the approximate output of the proposed PV system needs to be calculated which is compared against the annual electricity usage, the cost of electricity and, the occupancy profile of the property.
How does a Solar PV system work?
A solar PV system works by using photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar panels to convert sunlight directly into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then sent to an inverter, which transforms it into alternating current (AC) electricity, the type needed to power a home's appliances. Surplus AC electricity can either be stored in batteries or sent back to the national grid.
What is PV battery storage?
PV battery storage combines solar panels (photovoltaic or PV) with a battery system to store excess electricity generated by the panels for later use. This allows you to power your home with stored solar energy at night or during cloudy days, reducing your reliance on the grid, lowering electricity bills, and increasing energy independence. The stored energy can also be used to take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs or to provide energy to the grid when needed.
Will a PV system provide power in the event of a power cut?
No, a standard grid-tied solar PV system will not provide power during a power cut because they automatically shut down for safety reasons to prevent electrocution of grid engineers. To have power during an outage, your solar system needs a solar battery storage system with Emergency Power Supply (EPS) functionality, which allows it to disconnect from the grid and power your home using stored energy or direct generation from your panels.
Artimus provides a modification service so power is available to either dedicated circuits of whole house back up in the event of a power cut. The capabilities of any backup is dependent on the specifications of the battery storage system and the inverter.
